Majestic Theatre
The Wiz
The Wiz was an all-black production of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz. It made its Broadway debut on January 5th, 1975 starring Stephanie Mills as Dorothy, which the role promoted her to stardom. Originally, The Wiz was met with mixed critical reviews when it first premiered at the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia, but once the show landed on Broadway it was a smash hit.
The Wiz takes a more modern approach to the turn of the century story Baum told, and is not influenced by the MGM movie musical, giving the show its own style and unique look. This musical has influenced many people and has introduced the world to a soulful re-telling of the beloved tale.
Today the Majestic Theatre still stands, having put on such productions as Carousel (1945), Camelot (1960), and has housed The Phantom Of The Opera since its opening in 1988.
