Gershwin Theatre
What do shoes have to do with the Gershwin Theatre? Well, it is home to the musical Wicked, written by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, based off of the book by Gregory Maguire, Wicked: The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch Of The West. We are given the backstory to one of Hollywood's most famous villains. We witness Elphaba (her name was conceived by combining L. Frank Baum's name together) growing up and being shunned for her green skin. Eventually growing to womanhood and becoming an enemy of The Wizard Of Oz and...well, the rest is history.
Wicked magically incorporates elements from the books and movies and creates a new Oz that has inspired and entertained people ever since the Time Dragon waved its wings over the stages in 2003. One could argue that Wicked changed the face of musical theatre and issued the dawn of a new era of musicals.
